Music has been around for centuries. Its the life and breadth of culture and lifestyle throughout every generation. In today’s world, the way we listen to music is changing with wireless earphones to face recognition smartphones. Music platforms like SoundCloud, Pandora, and Spotify are expanding. As a Business major, I like to read up on current events every couple of weeks to stay updated with the current market. One thing that caught my attention is Spotify and how it recently released its IPO this week on Tuesday, April 3rd. I found it interesting to see how different this company is compared to other publicly traded companies. It’s crazy to see how this is one of the largest music streaming companies to go public besides Apple.

SoundCloud and Pandora are two well-known music streaming companies that serve as their competitor against Spotify. However, showing how Spotify was able to go public gives them a better overview of how much better they are doing compared to their competition. Out of the three companies, I use Spotify the most. I feel like a lot of streaming companies are in a battle for content nowadays. For example, Netflix and Hulu are both online streaming companies but they provide different shows and content to its customers. Content wins consumers and I feel like Spotify does a great job at this. Preference plays a huge role in deciding which music streaming service you use. I would recommend Spotify solely based on the music and content it provides. I am curious to know what others think and how their views may be different with other companies.

  1. I think Spotify has been the most successful out of all streaming services to date. I guess this is mainly due to their large music database and their marketing. Compared to music downloading, this is cheaper if you download a lot of music and it gives you a chance to listen to songs that you might not encounter otherwise.

  2. I'm an avid Spotify user- I think Spotify Premium is worth every penny of the $9.99 monthly subscription. But I must admit, Pandora is great for discovering new music, as it chooses specific songs based on artist and song selections.

  3. I definitely use Spotify the most compared to Soundcloud and Pandora as well. I find Spotify Premium to be really convenient because you get to download music in advance. I also think that Spotify's partnership with Hulu for student subscribers was a smart move for the company.

  4. It is so interesting that every one I know loves and uses spotify but I hate it. I think the user interface is so ugly! One of the main UX rules is to never use a black background on an app and spotify defies that which I just despise. Guess I am just a graphic design snob!

  5. Good topic, I find it very interesting on how competitive of a landscape the music streaming industry is. I agree that Spotify is also the best, they truly have a wonderful platform that pretty much allows you to discover and listen to any sort of music.

  6. I love to use Spotify! But what's interesting to me is how Spotify went public despite not having the best profit margins out there; there's also rumblings of them acquiring Soundcloud, which has a bunch of legal issues out in courts right now regarding licensing fees with all the remixes that are on the website. It should be interesting to see how Spotify's business model plays out, but in the time being, I'm going to enjoy using my Spotify premium with an ad are experience.

  7. I love that you wrote about it. I also like keeping up with this type of news and am very intruiged by how the did a non-traditional public offering and want to track how they can turn around their $500 million net operating loss.

  9. Pandora has struggled mightily in the past financially. Soundcloud has also had its difficulties building a viable revenue model. I have always used iTunes and now Apple Music, but I am sure of that Spotify is now a better platform. I just don't want to have to restart my whole music library.
